The Tang Band W2-852SH

We're into very high end here folks (tongue in cheek)

Cost was less than $20 CAD each, bought on sale at  www.solen.ca for like $10 a piece.

If the datasheet is accurate, with a 86 dB efficiency, some low QTS, a reasonable frequency plot and a FS of 160 Hz. It could work in a horn.

I had to try to horn load it.

W2 datasheet here

Could be a nice 2-way system with a pair of 12" crossed at ~800 Hz

For watching TV, this would suffice, as it's a TV speaker after all :)

I used the Eminence H2EA horn to mount the TB driver.

H2EA Horn is exponential with 2" throat entry (60 x 40 coverage)

The cut off is 700 Hz.

Match should be good

As per speaker datasheet, there is some anomaly above 14 kHz. Ideally, they would need a tweeter at ~7 kHz)

Results are interesting.

I need to try a back chamber before I give it a listen.

Seriously, I WILL listen to this cause, as I've been bored lately.

Like Edison once said : "I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.”

Update: Day 2.

Just in case you’ve never seen an idea take off. How about this? I horn loaded a cheap TV speaker on a horn designed for PA use, and normally used with a compression driver.

There must been a reason for nobody using this.

Because it’s not working. Well… not satisfactory at least.

Subjectively, it does suck big time. No matter what music you play, it hurts.

Very veiled, colored and kind of hopeless really.

No miracle cure… even with a DSP, the sonic are poor.

The speaker cone breaks up above 10 kHz making all cymbals sound exactly the same and unrealistic.

I could go on and on describing the lame sound, but it’d be a waste of time, you get the idea.

I did try to listen to the set up with the horn playing @ 700 Hz – 20 kHz

I put a new measurement but ended up wasting 3 hours of my time. And that was that.
